The qualitative and quantitative tracking of biological processes at the molecular level requires direct or indirect detection methods of macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids) or low-molecular compounds (metabolites). Focussing on targets of different functional cellular levels has enormously increased the demands on multiple data collection. In this lecture, we deal with the basic (structural) analytical and preparative methods that are used and applied on a daily basis in almost every bioscience laboratory. The focus is on understanding the underlying methodological mechanisms and the resulting complexity of biological data sets. The aim is to encourage students to critically analyze both their own and published experimental results. This lecture is designed for students on the Bachelor's degree programme in Technical Biology.
